"I was born in a garage" is a 3D film about the iconic Estonian architect Emil Urbel, a tireless promoter of architecture and a sophisticated creator known for his public buildings and the famous white villas in the neo-functionalist style. It is a psychological portrait of one of the leading Estonian architects and the current state of the Estonian architectural landscape through the eyes of an independent creator. Having grown up without a father, the modest Emil Urbel chose a profession that allows him to create functional and beautiful homes for his clients - everything that he, unfortunately, lacked as a child. "A man who was born in a garage and never lived in a private house" is a phenomenon and is the subject of discovery in this film.
"I was born in a garage" raises the question, what is Emil Urbel's creative method? What is good architecture? What should a good city be like? Are we noticing architecture too late? Can we be more informed and know the names of the most successful objects and their architects? What should a good house be in harmony with, how can an architect find a balance between dreams, good taste, and the client's possibilities? An answer will also be given to the question that worries many Estonians: "Is it possible to have a house that is at the same time by the sea, in the city center and preserving the privacy of the resident?". The film reveals the stoic and charismatic nature of Emil Urbel. In the film, we travel with him in his self-created space and mindset. Filmed in 3D.
