Fatima lives with her family in Molenbeek, Brussels, waiting patiently for a new home in the Maghreb region. When her hopes are dashed, she decides to follow her old dream of performing Shakespeare in a theatre. Her friends encourage her and become her theatre troupe. Their reality is about to take shape, as is everything around them.

In 2009, Nabil Ben Yadir surprised everyone with his debut film, a comedy and love letter to his Brussels neighbourhood, Les Barons. Now, he’s back in the neighbourhood with a bold film co-directed by his mother, Mokhtaria Badaoui. Mokhtaria and Nabil poured their heart and soul and a lot of imagination into portraying a group of women on an adventure of a lifetime.

Combining comedy, drama, surrealism and a touch of absurdity with plenty of creative freedom, “The Baronesses” is a magical and enchanting tale of belated emancipation. Using equal parts of humour and poetry, the Maghrebi mums you encounter daily on the streets – people who are usually far from the world of cinema – are transformed into heroines. It is a sharp and moving film; because sometimes unconventional stories need magic to be told.
